Mustangs, beavers, and hypnotic eyes

When I was a kid, we didn’t have a swimming pool or tennis court in our backyard. Nor did we belong to the local swim club. We didn’t even go to the swimming pool at the Wright-Patt Officer’s Club.
No, we went to the swimming pool at Defense Electronics Supply Center (aka DESC – [...]

Ride like the wind

My first bike was an old orange and white Schwinn with a banana seat, and my brother’s first bike was a black and yellow Huffy. We learned to ride in our backyard, and then practiced at the top of our driveway and on our back patios before hitting the hilly streets of our neighborhood.
Our [...]

Granny

My grandmother died on Valentine’s Day.
We always went out to dinner at the Oakwood Club on Valentine’s Day. My grandparents moved into their home on Valentine’s Day in 1947 – the same home where my grandmother lived until her death – and we celebrated that anniversary each year with a family dinner. Even [...]

Not in my backyard

Along with the public school system and kids’ bedrooms that were larger than jail cells, my top priority while house-hunting in Colorado was the backyard.
It didn’t need to be big enough for a swingset or a sandbox, but it had to be somewhat level with a nice expanse of grass.  It didn’t need to be [...]

Herman Anne

Sunday evening, I received a call from my cousin:  “I just want to know why you’re writing about orgasms on my birthday.”
Well, hello to you too, little missy.
She’s probably right that I should have feted her properly (sorry, I’m really digging that word lately) on her 19th birthday, instead of writing a shock-jock kind of [...]

Stupid is as stupid does

And the same is true for intelligence.
While I’m all for celebrating accomplishments – our own and our children’s – I find it wryly amusing that many proud parents leap to improbable conclusions.  As Jill rightfully noted in Liz’s comments:  “My husband and I laugh at the fact that our friends’ kids seem to have the lock on [...]

Never a bridesmaid, thank god

Two friends of mine from college got married in the spring of 1995.  The bride asked me to be a bridesmaid, and then un-asked me a few months later, explaining that she wanted to ask her brother’s girlfriend instead.  She offered the consolation prize of being the guest book attendant, which I turned down.
By the [...]

SOS = Sick Of Snow

I’ve shoveled my share of driveways.

If the snow fell overnight, my father shoveled.  But if the snow fell during the day, the responsibility was on my brother and me to ensure that the driveway was clear enough that our parents could make it to the top.
And it was heavy, wet midwestern snow, where each shovelful [...]

Skate or die

Nearly nineteen years ago I saw Christian Hosoi skate at an NSA vert contest in Dayton, Ohio.  Scooped up the stickers his team threw into the crowd afterward.  And then moshed with him at the party that night.
Moshed.  Slam-dancing, you pervs.
And if you’d told me then that someone would someday send me a DVD chronicling [...]

How the Rubik’s Cube contributed to my delinquency

The first time I ever got into trouble at school was thanks to a Rubik’s cube.
I was in fourth grade and had recently concluded that academic achievement wasn’t doing anything for me socially.  Fortunately, I didn’t yet have to work very hard on the academic side, which allowed me to focus on how to be [...]
