What’s under HER skirt?
We gave our two weeks’ notice at CJ’s pre-school last Friday.
At least one of our kids has been attending this pre-school since we arrived in Colorado nearly three years ago. It came highly recommended by Stacey, whose own son had attended since he was six weeks old. I filled in when they were […]

Motherhood: The Land of Indigenous Assvice
When I became pregnant for the first time, I was woefully unprepared for how other people - friends, relatives, and complete strangers - would take my expanding belly as license to share their unsolicited opinions regarding a wide variety of topics, from changing tables to breastfeeding.
Because every mother-to-be feels like discussing the proper purpose of […]

As Chuck D said, bring the noise
Tacy: I know how to get five dollars from Daddy.
Me: Oh really? How’s that?
T: If all three kids don’t cry for an entire day, he’ll give us each five dollars.
Me: Interesting.
T: Of course it probably won’t happen.
Me: You’re probably right.

Would you believe that my three year-old cries more than my two month-old? And […]

Elimination day at the zoo
Yesterday we went to the zoo, as has been our Easter tradition since 2003. As we were packing up, I called upstairs to Kyle, “Toss down a spare outfit, will you?”
“Think we’ll need it?” he called back.
“Remember what happened at the zoo when CJ was Oliver’s age?”
A striped sleeper landed on my head, and […]

Ride like the wind
My first bike was an old orange and white Schwinn with a banana seat, and my brother’s first bike was a black and yellow Huffy. We learned to ride in our backyard, and then practiced at the top of our driveway and on our back patios before hitting the hilly streets of our neighborhood.
Our […]

Exaggerated exasperation
My friend Kate emailed me yesterday to ask about having a third child. She was already uncertain about the prospect, and I suppose Monday’s post didn’t exactly reassure her. Likewise, based on some of the comments, I set a few other moms on edge too.
I may have exaggerated a teeny tiny bit. […]

Fearlessness
When I was five, we moved into a new house that my parents had built. It was on one of the last two lots in the neighborhood, and the other remaining lot was next door to ours.
The far edge of our backyard was a steep hillside lined with a row of honeysuckle trees, and […]

Boob tube
Given how often this new baby eats, I’ve been spending most of my waking hours on the sofa. But even with the platinum level cable package we’ve got, there still isn’t always something on TV worth watching - or that’s appropriate for Tacy and CJ to watch too.
And you can bet that I’m not […]

Guess how much I love you
“What would you like for Valentine’s Day?”
“Sex.”
“Not yet. Sorry.”
“What would YOU like for Valentine’s Day?”
“A full night’s sleep.”
“Not yet. Sorry.”
——————————
I don’t want roses or chocolate or wine - although I wouldn’t turn down either of the latter two. I don’t even really care about getting a full night’s sleep.
What I want is […]

The F word
A friend of mine - some of you know her - nursed her twins for an entire year, and neither one of them ever had a drop of formula. Even more amazing to me is the fact that she worked outside the home - she pumped the majority of that milk.
A laudable accomplishment? […]
