There’s much more to us than dipes and wipes
Lindsay at Suburban Turmoil wrote an excellent post yesterday about blogger outreach - and I use that term loosely - by marketing and PR firms. Likewise, Liz weighed in shortly after BlogHer on the same topic, along with several others.
As Kristen commented at It’s Not A Lecture, we talk to marketing and PR firms […]

An excellent example of why I’m so disillusioned by both sides of the aisle
Reprinted - with my emphasis added in italics (and bold, where especially mind-boggling) - from CNN:
“By RON FOURNIER
WASHINGTON (AP) — The hypocrisy is unpardonable. President Bush’s decision to commute the sentence of a convicted liar brought out the worst in both parties.
Activists, one costumed as Scooter Libby, demonstrate across from the White House on Tuesday to protest […]

The times, they are a-changin’…
And with all due honor and respect, I’d suggest that Gen Pace come along for the ride.
General Peter Pace, USMC, is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is the highest ranking member of the United States armed forces. According to the AP article, Pace “likened homosexual acts to adultery and said the […]

Hey, David Brooks? News flash!
Guess what? Old white retired military guys living outside the Beltway dig hummus too.
From e-mail exchanged with my father on Sunday:
“I feel better after eating left over frozen yogurt I had made weeks ago and horseradish hummus with melba toast and red wine…I only buy hummus when it is on SUPER special. This was still $1.99, marked […]

Outside the Beltway, looking in
I lived and worked inside the Beltway for four years, at a time when it was next to impossible to ignore politics no matter where you lived. All of my friends were either military, government civilians, government contractors, or lawyers. I watched “Meet the Press” and read Matt Drudge and lurked on Free Republic. I […]

From Martin Luther King Jr. to gay marriage
Monday, Tacy asked me why she didn’t have to go to school.
Given the delicate discussions we’ve had recently, I trod lightly. Or tried to.
Segregation always makes me think of the Pentagon. It was built in the 1940s, and segregation is still evident in the number of restrooms in the building. Many, MANY more restrooms than […]

A tale of a Veteran’s Day
Regarding Hannah’s comment below: We were safe at home in the ‘burbs last night. My greatest sympathies to Frank Bingham for the loss of his wife and children.
I think it was 1998. The night before, we went with my parents to a wine sampling (not tasting - which meant we didn’t spit; we swallowed), plus appetizers and […]

Darts for donuts
In all of the positions I held while assigned to the Pentagon, I worked closely with members of the Joint Staff - men and women from all four branches of the military. For a year, I was the program manager for a twenty year-old nuclear command and control system - responsible and accountable to […]

An officer and a lady
Women are so tough on one another. It starts when we are toddlers, and it never lets up. Dawn and Jenn recently posted about the inherent difficulties of female friendships, and both of their posts made me think of a post that I’ve had brewing for a while.
I’ve been through the same typical difficulties - […]

Tourism in the workplace
Zube Girl had a wonderful post about the clueless tourists she encounters at work. If you haven’t read Zube Girl, she works for a ski resort in Breckenridge (here in Colorado), so she deals with tourists every day. Clueless ones, which make for an entertaining post, but also cause much frustration during the workday.
Prior to […]
