He’s a boob man
I used to think that mothers who claimed their babies wouldn’t take a bottle were full of it.
(Ducks and covers while onlookers throw rotten tomatoes.)
The way I saw it, I had two kids who were happily breastfed, neither of whom were thrilled with the bottle the first few times it was presented. But by […]

The torture of sleep deprivation
“So how’s the baby sleeping?”
What, the dark circles under my eyes aren’t enough of an answer?
I think fear of anticipated sleep deprivation was my number one concern when I discovered I was pregnant last summer. Not whether we could afford another baby, or where he would sleep, or the fact that we’d given away […]

Motherhood: The Land of Indigenous Assvice
When I became pregnant for the first time, I was woefully unprepared for how other people - friends, relatives, and complete strangers - would take my expanding belly as license to share their unsolicited opinions regarding a wide variety of topics, from changing tables to breastfeeding.
Because every mother-to-be feels like discussing the proper purpose of […]

As Chuck D said, bring the noise
Tacy: I know how to get five dollars from Daddy.
Me: Oh really? How’s that?
T: If all three kids don’t cry for an entire day, he’ll give us each five dollars.
Me: Interesting.
T: Of course it probably won’t happen.
Me: You’re probably right.

Elimination day at the zoo
Yesterday we went to the zoo, as has been our Easter tradition since 2003. As we were packing up, I called upstairs to Kyle, “Toss down a spare outfit, will you?”
“Think we’ll need it?” he called back.
“Remember what happened at the zoo when CJ was Oliver’s age?”
A striped sleeper landed on my head, and […]

No babies allowed at Camp Baby
When I got the invitation to Johnson’s Camp Baby, I hadn’t even been home from the hospital for three weeks. I was trying to get back up to speed with posting, Parent Bloggers and Cool Mom Picks, along with adjusting yet again to life with a newborn. Plus my grandmother had died the […]

Exaggerated exasperation
My friend Kate emailed me yesterday to ask about having a third child. She was already uncertain about the prospect, and I suppose Monday’s post didn’t exactly reassure her. Likewise, based on some of the comments, I set a few other moms on edge too.
I may have exaggerated a teeny tiny bit. […]

We’ve got a routine established, but I’m hoping to change it.
Between the hours of 6am and 10pm, at least one person - usually a child, but not always - is crying.
And between the hours of 10pm and 6am, at least one person - usually two, but not always - is awake.
Also between the hours of 6am and 10pm, Tacy is talking incessantly. About something. […]

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…
Too tired and too busy to do more than ask questions, show pictures, and issue reminders…

What is your philosophy regarding disciplining other people’s children? How do you react when another child misbehaves toward your child - at a playdate at your house, at a playgroup, in a public playspace?
How do you handle it when […]
