Why I just can’t get on the John Krasinski bandwagon

I may not watch much prime time TV, but “The Office” is one show that I don’t miss.

Granted, I was a little late to the party, just as I was with “Seinfeld” and “Friends”.  Come to think of it, I haven’t been a loyal viewer of any series all the way from the premiere, not even “Survivor”.  I usually end up watching reruns on TBS, exclaiming all the while, “How did I not KNOW about this show?!”

So I watch “The Office”, both in prime time and in reruns on TBS, and I laugh my head off.  There simply aren’t any bad episodes.  And while it’s not necessary to have actual office experience in order to enjoy the show, some of the scenes are just that much funnier if you’ve been there, done that.

Plus it’s intriguing to examine the characters and relate them back to your own co-workers, past or present.  Like the single older woman whom you suspect would, given half a chance, screw the boss (or just about any other guy in the place).  Or the skeevy guy who brings in individually wrapped plastic cups (obviously stolen from motel rooms and secreted away for god only knows how many years) as his contribution to office potluck lunches.  Or the brown-noser who’s overly concerned with titles and spends far too much time examining the office org chart, noting who reports to whom and plotting his way up the ladder.

But then there’s also the guy who’s great to have around.  Whether you work with him or for him or in an different department altogether, he makes office life not just bearable, but enjoyable.  He’s the voice of reason and the injection of common sense in situations that have the potential to spiral out of control.  Plus, he’s always up for a beer after work.  That’s Jim Halpert, right there.

Problem is, the more I watch “The Office”, the more I realize how much John Krasinski’s character reminds me of one of my former co-workers, right down to his facial expressions and calm, unruffled demeanor in the face of insanity.

And it hit me – that’s why I can’t swoon over him the way so many of my friends do (most notably, Mrs. Chicky).  It’s not that John Krasinski isn’t swoon-worthy; it’s that Jim Halpert bears such a striking resemblance to someone over whom I never considered swooning.

Attractive as they may be, I try not to swoon over co-workers.  It’s rarely a good idea, especially when we’re both married and know each other’s spouses.

So my apologies to John Krasinski and his legions of fans.  John, objectively speaking, you’re quite attractive and I love watching you on “The Office”.  But your interpretation of Jim Halpert is just way too good.  I’m sorry.

Rest assured, you’re in good hands with Mrs. Chicky.

There are a lot of people who can’t stand The Office and I just don’t get it. I laugh my ass off every Thursday night. Dwight and Michael don’t have to say a word. Just looking at them is hysterical. And the episode after the Super Bowl? When Angela threw the cat into the ceiling and it came right back down? Classic. :)

I am unapologetic in my love for that man. However, I think I liked him better before he and Pam got together. I liked that unrequited lovesick puppy dog thing he had going on.

Eh, who am I kidding? I still wouldn’t kick him out of bed for eating crackers.

Alison, I laughed until I cried during that episode. That opening sequence had me howling, and so did the CPR training.

I’ve never seen The Office. I tend to like to catch things later though, since I am impatient and we tend to get whole seasons from Netflix.

That horse is freaky. It weirds me out every time.

I get what you’re saying — you might remember my posts about my former coworker “Fred” from my last job. Long before I ever watched The Office, people told us we were kind of like Pam & Jim in the way we interacted.

I didn’t get what they meant until I started watching the show. And of course since Pam & Jim were really good friends when the show started, I could see the similarities… but when they started actually dating on the show, it kind of freaked me out. Fred’s like a brother to me, not a boyfriend!

I don’t think I explained this well… but you probably know what I’m trying to say. ;-)

You would LOVE the British version of the show, it started the American one.
the boss is much ruder, and weirder and you feel uncomfortable sometimes watching it, but it’s soooooo funny.

It was just a TV special and it spawned the American series.
