Pudding in my pantry, raisins in my carpet

I do the grocery shopping around this house.

I figure that even if I’m on a tight budget, I still have to buy groceries, and if I have to break out my credit card, it still counts as shopping. Granted, buying olive oil is nowhere near as fun as buying shoes, but I take what I can get.

I also do the grocery shopping because I take an organized approach to it. I make a list. I sort my coupons. I take note of which items are on special. I rarely buy on impulse.

Kyle, on the other hand, goes to the store for three items and comes home with thirty. It’s why we have three open containers each of cinnamon, garlic salt, rosemary, basil, and oregano. It’s also why we occasionally have some snacks around the house that I’d never buy.

In fact, you can tell that he’s been shopping recently just by inspecting our pantry:

Pudding cups. You’d never know the man was a health nut. But they’re sugar-free! he protests, and the girls echo him.

They may be sugar-free, but they’re still a treat. Go fix yourself a bowl of broccoli.

You’d think that raisins would be above my criticism, but you’d only think that if you’d never found raisins ground into your carpet. I freaking HATE raisins. If I buy them, it’s only because they are destined for a recipe, and I buy them in a large canister rather than individual boxes.

Kyle buys stuff now that never darkened our cupboards before we had kids – pop tarts, gummy fruit vitamins. juice boxes – and I just shake my head and dole out the baby carrots.

But if ever I find yogurt in a tube in my refrigerator, that’s the day all hell’s going to break loose around here.

What snacks are hiding in your pantry or in your diaper bag or in your kids’ lunch boxes? ‘Fess up and you could win one of two $250 gift cards to your local grocery store. Just be sure that YOU hang onto the card, and buy yourself a treat or two (delicious and healthy aren’t mutually exclusive, you know. I won’t tell.

Want to check out some new kids’ books that actually meet my approval? Hey, that’s high praise from this children’s book snob.

Nick’s is chips; he can’t go to the store without buying chips. Honestly the girls and I could care less about chips most days. We have about 8 bags of opened and two handfuls eaten bags of chips in our pantry. Eventually I’ll get sick of it, throw them out and he’ll wait a week and start buying more.

Charlie Brown is a cookie monster, and we’re not talking fig newtons, either. No, full-on oreos and other hydrogenated, sugary blasts.

I’m also vehemently opposed to the yogurt in the tube too. “You will eat your Cascadian Farms/Dannon Natural and you will like it!”

My husband buys chips and ice cream.

And my feeling about sugar-free anything is that those chemicals will kill you. If he’s a health nut, sugar is better…

You know, when I read the title in Reader I thought this post was going in a different direction (sex, where’s my mind?). Glad to see it’s actually about food. I try to be healthy but there are some things that get me. Every now and then I treat myself to those Betty Crocker Warm Delights. I prefer the Molten Caramel Cake. God only knows what’s in them, but they taste so good.

I first read that and thought it said pudding in your panties. I then thought that that was a weird topic and HOW did you get pudding there ANYway, not to mention the raisins…. I have NOT had coffee yet. Why do you ask?

I make a list too. And organize my coupons based on how the store is laid out…you know, so they’re in the correct order. I know, I’m weird. But, I will eat pudding cups, and my son loves yogurt in a tube, and I buy cookies and chips weekly! :) I’m currently eating one of those nasty cheese and cracker things…you know, where you spread the gross cheese on with the little red stick? :)

  12. mom101 Says:

Okay Kyle is Nate except for the sugar free part. I can’t let him go grocery shopping because a list of 10 items becomes 16 bags of truffle oil and artisanal cheeses and some brand new flavored water at $16 a bottle.

    You only think I’m exaggerating

I hate raisins too! My mom says I used to eat them all the time when I was a child, but I think that’s total blasphemy. I hope my baby likes more interesting dried fruits, like apricots… mmmm….

I stopped buying oreos and cheetos about 4 years ago when I decided I wanted to lose some weight. When my aunt was out visiting recently she left like 4 packages of oreos at my dad’s house when she left. Apparently since I am over the weight losing thing and my dad isn’t he sent the oreos home with me. I wish I could say they were still in the cupboard but they were hounded down by my husband and children (and only slightly by me) in a matter of mere seconds. As the fruitlady you can now find me back to resuming my usual position of organic banana pusher and peach parlayer.

we try to convince ourselves that pringles aren’t really potato chips, thats why we have 3 flavors in our pantry. That, and cheese crackers and yogurt covered rasins.

  19. JenniferB Says:

I love, love, love salsa and chips — and it’s even better if there is some cream cheese in the house, a chunk of which is warmed in a bowl, salsa poured over, then devoured with chips. I think I feel my hips growing. I also love fresh zucchini sticks, so does that balance out?

  20. Email From The Embassy Says:

You people are making me hungry. I live in China, where Cheetos (if you can find them) run $10 a bag. So there is very little recognizable junk food in my cupboard.

Back in the States, I used to buy those yogurt-in-a-tubes and freeze them. They made for psuedo-healthy popsicles.

Here? I can’t afford the imported junk food or convenience food. On the plus side – no raisins in my carpet…

Just found your blog. I’ll be back…

  21. Oz Says:

I buy graham crackers all the time – and Axel doesn’t even eat them yet.

I also freeze bananas and then melt chocolate chips and dip the bananas in them. Oh it is soooooo good, and I convince myself it’s healthy because of the banana.

Hmmm…my daughter (2) LOVES her frozen yogurt in a tube. If we are being “bad” that week you will find roll ups and potato chips mixed in with our fruit and veggies. My personal weekness – crumb cake – is outlawed currently.
