Boobies welcome at Tully’s Coffee!
Last month, some punk ass old lady apparently had a problem with my lovely friend Catherine’s lovely boobies. And yes, I know personally that they are lovely – we bared breast together many times at BlogHer.
Bared breast. I like that almost as much as dropped trou.
Most of the time, such as at the League of Maternal Justice, we write about the instances where breastfeeding is stepped on, beaten down, and kicked around. We notice when people look at us askance, and we go home and we write about it. Or we read other people’s posts about getting the stink-eye, and we remember and recount our own uncomfortable experiences.
I’ve got a public breastfeeding success story to share – and while my baby was present, I wasn’t.
No, there wasn’t any cross-nursing going on.
Kyle took Oliver out to the grocery store, which was recently renovated to include a Tully’s Coffee. Being a bit of a coffee-addict, he brought Oliver into the coffee shop to fuel up and admire the new space.
“Hey, you’ve even got those big, cushy leather chairs,” he commented to the girls at the counter.
A manager from the grocery store walking up to the counter himself overheard Kyle and noticed Oliver in his carrier. “They’re perfect for breastfeeding!” he enthused.
Being his typical smart-alecky self, Kyle looked down at his chest and said, “Hmmm…not gonna happen.”
But when he came home and told me this story, I was ready to hop in the car, find that manager, and give him a high-five.
Or a fist-bump. Heh.
Free Wi-Fi, coffee and pastries, and active encouragement of breastfeeding. Mama’s got herself a new local hangout.

Awwww. That is so awesome. If I’m ever breastfeeding in Denver, I know where I’m headed.
My downtown, in the skyway, super business *bucks also wins for being super supportive. My favorite barista is breastfeeding past 1 as well, so we’re buds.
It is almost like someone should start a list of businesses where it is supported, so we can send the money their way…

That is TEH AWESOME!! I’m so glad to hear that they are accepting breastfeeding moms. More places need to be that wonderful and we’d all be throwing money at them.

Finally, a normal dude enthused about public breastfeeding. I never got the whole “ew, don’t show me your boobies unless they’re on some slut on the internet” mindset.
Hi. Boobs are Boobs. ENJOY them however they are flashed at you, people.

I was surprised about Catherine’s post because generally, in Canada, at least out here on the West Coast, the pervasive attitude about public breast feeding is very accepting.
I find it ironic that the most morally permissive society (look at the shows the USA produces, the obsession we have with plastic surgery, big breasts, the size of the pornography industry, etc) is also the most morally repressed. And poor old breastfeeding gets caught in the middle of it. Quite a dichotomy to say the least.

I love it! I was lucky enough to never have a bad public breastfeeding experience, but I still love hearing the positive stories.

My only bad breastfeeding experience was when the in-laws would send me to a stifling hot back room to feed the babe. That’s love my friends.
That said, I have much love for places that make breastfeeding convenient and comfortable. Hello, Nordstrom!

That is really great! I have never felt encouraged to breastfeed somewhere. At best, I have felt not discouraged. Good for him and that coffee shop!
