Talk me down…

…because I am thisclose to buying Tacy a pair of Crocs.

(I know.  I KNOW.)

Count me among the ranks of the Croc-haters.  I feel the same way about Crocs that my mother felt about jellies when I was a kid.

But my girl is ridiculously hard on her shoes.  Doesn’t matter where they’re from or how much they cost, most of them fall apart after only weeks of wear.

Just this morning, we pitched two pairs – canvas peep-toe wedges from Target, and sequinned Mary Janes from Vincent.  They were both so trashed that there was no way they could be handed down to CJ or donated to charity.

She’d worn the Mary Janes for the first day of school yesterday, much to my chagrin.  Not only were about half the sequins missing – just bare threads coming out from all sides of each shoe – but they smelled AWFUL.  Kyle’s a grown man, and his shoes don’t stink like that.  In defense of the shoes, they were meant to be dress shoes, but she wore them repeatedly for playtime.

My mother bought her the wedges when Tacy visited my parents back in May.  Not only were the shoes filthy, the backs of the heels were crushed down.  Every time she wore those shoes, Kyle and I had to constantly remind her to stop stepping on the heels.  “Leave your foot INSIDE!” we’d chide her, which I’m sure sounded quite strange to anyone who overheard us.  You can come outside, but your feet have to stay in!

Her latest play-shoes of choice are a pair of flip-flops purchased only three weeks ago.  They’re about one step above Crocs in terms of looks, and they’re already a mess.  Plus, they’re really not the safest option for riding bikes and scooters.

She starts soccer next week, so I need to get her a pair of cleats, and she’s outgrown her last pair of sneakers, so those are on the list too.  After we tossed out the two pairs of shoes this morning, I hopped onto the Vincent site and ordered a couple new pairs of school shoes at a deep discount.

I’m hoping that will hold us until the holidays.  And that cooler weather will arrive on schedule September 1, neutralizing my impulse to buy a pair of Crocs for my resident shoe-destroyer.

Allow me to express what may be an unpopular opinion: crocs on kids are cute. (On adults, now that should not be allowed). I’m not going to talk you down. Do it.

    Dude.
Crocs are a lazy mom’s best friend in the summertime. They can get them on BY THEMSELVES, so I don’t have to do sandal straps or buckles.
And, yeah, those suckers are virtually indestructible.

  3. Carla Alvarez Says:

I know, I thought they were incredibly ugly when I first saw them . . . but my kids love them. I have a hard time getting them to wear anything else.

And I have a pair that I wear around the house and just for errand.s

I have my take the dog out pair that I may wear to the grocery store, but that is it. However, on kids, they are cute. Maybe cause they don’t have such huge feet.

Yeah, I caved on this back in the spring (I’ve also always been in the OK-on-kids camp). We got the cheap imitations from TRU and they’ve survived daily wear for the whole summer.

  6. Cara Says:

I have to admit that as much as I hate Crocs on adults, and I HATE them on adults, I think they are cute on little girls. So while my inclination is to run screaming from those plastic shoes, if they’re cheap and easy, then maybe they’re not so bad. Oh my god, did I just say that? Barf.

C’mon, Crocs are adorable on kids and they never, ever wear out! We wash Z’s in the dishwasher once a month.

I hate crocs…they really are very ugly…but my kids all have a pair. They hold up great, they rinse off with a hose, and my kids can all get them on in an instant. For little girls especially i love their maryjane style :)

    Crocs on adults = asinine.

Crocs on kids = cute, functional and practical.

Here’s the thing: I HATE Crocs on adults. Gag. Hate them. If you aren’t working in your garden (and that is it), I don’t want to see them on your big feet.

BUT. . .for kids? I’m ok with that. First, they can put them on themselves. Second, they cover their toes so they can’t stub them. Third, they are in a bunch of fun KID colors. Fourth, if they get wet or muddy, they will be dry in a few minutes. Plus, my friend’s son has flat feet and her orthopedic told her to get him Crocs, so I figure they must be pretty good for kids’ feet.

Just don’t let me see them on you, ok?

  17. Jerri Ann Says:

I happen to like them. However, my 3 year old chose red, would only have them in red…had to have red…so I said ok, and for months he wore them with everything.he.owned…He didn’t care that his shirt was yellow and his shorts were green plaid, he would not listen, he was wearing his red crocs…so just be careful with the color you choose is all I have to say, lol!

  18. NG Says:

I hate, loathe and despise crocs. But they are great summer time water play shoes. So I let my daughter have a pair to take to preschool on water play days. You can just hose them off and they dry in a few seconds. The battles come when she decides she wants to wear them as shoes on other days… and I won’t let her because I am mean like that.

  19. The Yummy Mummy Cooks Gourmet Says:

They are ugly. For sure. But they are sturdy enough to survive a nuclear disaster and if someone spills a chocolate milk shake on their feet, you can wipe it up with a wash cloth.

Go to the light. Buy the crocs in a cute color. Feel good that although your kid’s feet look ridiculous, you will have no shoe-related jobs to do.

Unless your kid loses one and then, you’re gong back to the store.

    Love your blog! I’m a first-timer…

I think crocs are great shoes for kids, so I won’t be trying to talk you down. But I heard they’re on their way out, fashion-wise, so you might want to wait and see if you can find some one sale.

  21. Anissa@Hope4Peyton Says:

Oh yeah, agreeing but buy a REAL pair…the cheap ones they sell at Wal-mart (guilty) caused these MAD blisters to form on my girls’ feet, both of them. The real deal was purchased and all is well.

  22. Kimberly Says:

I’m no fan of Crocs and I’d never consider wearing them myself, but I think they’re fine for kids. I bought my girls a pair of Croc knock offs from Target in the spring – best thing I ever did!

They are functional, easy to clean, good for the park, the pool, the gym, the playground, etc. – and indestructible. Plus, they have no problem getting them on themselves.

  23. Lucrecia Says:

I hated crocs at first. But now that my kids have been wearing the same pair through 2 summers and they are still in good shape – I really can’t complain about them anymore! I even received a pair for Christmas (the fur lined ones) and have to quietly admit I love them. They are so so so ugly, but for around the house or just running to the store….

I like crocs on my (and other) kids. They have also proved durable and the Mary Janes go with everything. For grown ups I think they are typcially pretty awful. I did by myself a pair of croc sandals and I gotta say they are SO comfortable!

  27. Chicky Chicky Baby Says:

I think they are God awful ugly on adults but on kids Crocs are totally cute. And they can’t kill those damn shoes no matter what they do. They don’t smell and you can just hose them off and leave them in the sun to dry. LOVE them.

For kids. For adults they should be outlawed.

  28. Vicki Says:

LMAO. Seems everyone has the same concensus about putting crocs on adults…

I think they are great on kids and my boys are yet to tear theirs up. I actually found a pair small enough for my little guy!! And they keep him from standing on his tiptoes (he tries to do this all the time). I have to profess my love for them on kids.

Ugly *gag* on adults though. I work at a hospital and ALL the nurses wear them. It looks like croc barf on the floors around here.

  29. Tree Says:

I say they are okay for kids as they are durable, washable and more supportive than flip flops.

    An expensive alternative – Keens?

  30. Issa Says:

My mom bought my younger daughter crocs last week. I despise them, I’ve said it forever, but you know on a four year old, they aren’t so bad.
