Boob tube

Given how often this new baby eats, I’ve been spending most of my waking hours on the sofa. But even with the platinum level cable package we’ve got, there still isn’t always something on TV worth watching - or that’s appropriate for Tacy and CJ to watch too.

And you can bet that I’m not going to spend my post-partum days watching back-to-back episodes of Dora and Diego. That’s a recipe for depression right there.

So I’ve been paging through all the upcoming shows on the National Geographic and Discovery Science channels, setting the DVR to record ones that look interesting. I’ve learned about the birth of the universe, continental drift, global warming, and dark matter. I’ve seen how meth and moonshine are made. I’ve watched how animals and people live all over the world.

Not only is it much better than Dora and Diego, it beats Chachi and Peter Brady too.

But the coolest part is that the girls will still curl up on the sofa next to me and watch too. CJ prefers programs about space, while Tacy likes to learn about the earth (Six Degrees Could Change the World was a big favorite of hers).

Oliver hasn’t yet expressed a programming preference, but I can tell already that he’s a fan of the boob tube.

C’mon, Mommy. I’m waiting for it.

Maybe lounging in front of the TV isn’t the best way to introduce my kids to science, but it’s the best I can do right now. If you’ve got some better ideas, check out today’s PBN Blog Blast - “Bringing Science Back, Baby!” You could win one of three $100 VISA gift cards, courtesy of The Zula Patrol. Spend it on a chemistry set - or on maid service to clean up the aftermath in the kitchen.

Look how gorgeous he is! EEE!

And I’m a HUGE fan of random science shows. Scroll through PBS, too. You never know what they are going to show in the middle of the night. I’ve seen a couple of awesome documentaries that aired at 2am. Oh, and the History Channel! They have lots of great shows about the earth. There was one a few weeks ago called Life Without People, and was all it examined what the earth would look like 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 years after the sudden disappearance of people. It was amazing.

Oh my goodness, that face! I think I’m lactating again.

And, btw, my oldest tells me all these cool science facts and when I say, “where did you learn that?”, she says, “Zula Patrol”. No, nothing that I’ve taught her, just the TV show. Sigh. But, I’m glad she’s absorbing something good.

omg Julie, he is SO CUTE! I would like to swoop him up and smooch him all over his face!

I agree about daytime TV. I do let Kaitlyn watch The WonderPets and Dora, but otherwise I watch DVDs mostly. I remember when I used to watch all the CBS Soaps, but now they don’t make sense anymore.

I watched a lot of Law & Order too. And makeover shows. And real estate shows. I had only been back at work for a few months when we sold our house… so I’ve already been told I will not be permitted to watch any realty TV this time.

The Dora/Diego combo makes my ears bleed.

Love Oliver’s face. He’s so bright and cheery already - the boob tube must be agreeing with him.

Plus I love that changing pad or whatever he’s laying on!

I can’t imagine what I’d do for the next one b/c I’m watching all kinds of crazy shit during the feedings. lmao.

Guess someone’s going to have to buy me a TIVO to get any second-baby action.

He is just so beautiful! Really, really beautiful. :-)

I think watching those science shows is a great way to get your girls interested in science! Way better than the CSIs I watched while nursing (but this was our first).

I also watched a lot of Star Trek cause I’m geeky like that, and those are often very appropriate for children of all ages and have good moral themes (especially The Next Generation).

I’m gonna have to stop visiting if you don’t get the mating rats off the header.

It reminds me of all those shirts of frogs, pigs, mice, geckos doing 25 positions.

Anyway, wish I could come sit with you - but most specifically, stare at that baby and let my kids be educated by your tv.
