Granny
My grandmother died on Valentine’s Day.
We always went out to dinner at the Oakwood Club on Valentine’s Day. My grandparents moved into their home on Valentine’s Day in 1947 – the same home where my grandmother lived until her death – and we celebrated that anniversary each year with a family dinner. Even after I moved away, my grandmother never failed to call me on Valentine’s Day to see if she should include me in the dinner reservation.
I’ve written about her in detail already – both in a Valentine’s Day tribute originally published on Mommybloggers, and in a recap of her visit here in Denver in October 2006.
Goodbye, Granny. I love you and miss you and hope that you’re well.

My grandpa died on Valentine’s Day, too. It turned a rather saccharine holiday into a bittersweet time for reflection and looking through photo albums.

I remember your Granny came to visit post. I’m so very sorry, Julie. My grandmother was a pill for a good majority of her life, and yet I took her death really, really hard. I can’t imagine how much sadder I might’ve felt had she been sweet and grandmotherly.
My condolences, sweetie.

I am sorry for your loss. On such a potentially special day too. My Fathers funeral ended up being on Valentines Day (which is also his mothers birthday), which has made it a bittersweet holiday in our home.

[...] When my grandmother died, it was my daughter’s first experience with the death of someone she knew personally and loved very much. I explained that Granny’s body had worn out – that her heart couldn’t keep beating, so all of her body parts stopped working. I told her that this is what happens when people get old, and that Granny had lived for a long, long time. I told her that Granny knew how much we all loved her and that we’d never forget her. [...]
