Fearlessness
When I was five, we moved into a new house that my parents had built. It was on one of the last two lots in the neighborhood, and the other remaining lot was next door to ours.
The far edge of our backyard was a steep hillside lined with a row of honeysuckle trees, and […]

We’re not just the darlings of the advertising world. Now we’re the subject of important academic research too.
I’m nearing the end of the so-called “maternity leave” that I allowed myself after this baby was born. I can’t even really call it maternity leave because I’ve been working the whole time - even while I was still in the hospital - but at about one-quarter of my usual capacity. It’s time […]

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…
Too tired and too busy to do more than ask questions, show pictures, and issue reminders…

What is your philosophy regarding disciplining other people’s children? How do you react when another child misbehaves toward your child - at a playdate at your house, at a playgroup, in a public playspace?
How do you handle it when […]

Boob tube
Given how often this new baby eats, I’ve been spending most of my waking hours on the sofa. But even with the platinum level cable package we’ve got, there still isn’t always something on TV worth watching - or that’s appropriate for Tacy and CJ to watch too.
And you can bet that I’m not […]

Snip snip
Last week, I told Kyle, “Not yet. Sorry,” not so much out of concern for the condition of my delicate female bits or my third c-section scar, but because I’m frankly a bit gun shy where it comes to birth control.
Yes, I’m nursing, but we’ve all been told repeatedly that nursing is not an […]

Granny
My grandmother died on Valentine’s Day.
We always went out to dinner at the Oakwood Club on Valentine’s Day. My grandparents moved into their home on Valentine’s Day in 1947 - the same home where my grandmother lived until her death - and we celebrated that anniversary each year with a family dinner. Even […]

Guess how much I love you
“What would you like for Valentine’s Day?”
“Sex.”
“Not yet. Sorry.”
“What would YOU like for Valentine’s Day?”
“A full night’s sleep.”
“Not yet. Sorry.”

I don’t want roses or chocolate or wine - although I wouldn’t turn down either of the latter two. I don’t even really care about getting a full night’s sleep.
What I want is […]

The F word
A friend of mine - some of you know her - nursed her twins for an entire year, and neither one of them ever had a drop of formula. Even more amazing to me is the fact that she worked outside the home - she pumped the majority of that milk.
A laudable accomplishment? […]

What I’ve learned in the past week
A baby-crazed almost-six year-old who’s off from school for the next three weeks makes a fabulous mother’s helper. Please please please please please can I hold the baby?
If you want the kids to leave your tortilla chips alone, buy the kind made with blue corn. Ewwwww!
People - even nurses - are still really weird […]

Super Tuesday - get out there!
I can’t in good conscience let Super Tuesday pass without exhorting everyone in today’s primary/caucus states to get out there and take advantage of your opportunity to speak your mind (or pull that lever, or push that button, or punch that chad).
On the Republican side, there’s a field of four competitors. As Mike Huckabee […]
