Mile High Tri

While we live at nearly 6,000 feet above sea level, we barely notice the thin air anymore. Like following the high-altitude directions on the box of brownie mix and tucking the sunscreen into the diaper bag even in the middle of winter, we’ve grown accustomed to making do with less oxygen per breath. The only time I even realize how high up we are is when we go even higher, like to Breckenridge where I do tend to huff and puff a bit more.

This past weekend, Kyle completed his third annual local triathlon – 500 yard swim, 13 mile bike ride, 3 mile run. Sadly, we didn’t have Mayberry Mom and family with us this year. But we did have Kyle’s parents – and his father participated in the duathlon – 3 mile run, 13 mile bike ride, 3 mile run.

Hell, he didn’t just participate – he took second place in his age group.

His performance was all the more impressive considering he’d been training at sea level and only had a couple days to acclimate to the altitude.

Kyle may not have placed, but he was beaming every time we saw him, obviously enjoying himself. Each year, I watch him breeze through the triathlon, and I get inspired. Hey, I can do that too!

(Well, probably. If I worked my ass off and gave up the wine. Hmmm. Not sounding so appealing now.)

But this time, I’m thinking that training for a triathlon – even a mini-sprint one like that – would be a great way to motivate myself to get back in shape after this third (and final) pregnancy.

In the meantime, I’m huffing and puffing as I climb the stairs while carrying CJ. And I’m not even in Breckenridge.

Speaking of altitude (and a bit of attitude too), the Mile High Mamas are soft-launching today! I may (or may not) be a member of the legendary Mile High Club, but I most certainly am a Mile High Mama.

Not only will we Mamas be posting regularly, but we’ve got a forum set up that is already getting a bit contentious. Aimeea slave to consumerism? That’s news to me. And the lovely Catherine was told to get a life. Hey, just because she lives in the middle of nowhere (two hours to the nearest Target!) doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a life.

So come on over, if only to see that I’m not the only one in Colorado who doesn’t spend her days boarding and her nights smoking pot.

The reason I started training for triathlons was because the last 5 pounds from my last baby were not coming off as fast as I would like. Luckily, it turned out to be a sport I love and have continued.

Congrats to Kyle and his dad.

Now I’m going to check the new site.
