What really concerns me about BlogHer ‘07
It’s not my shoes. Or my bag. Or my pre-maternity clothes. Those are all quite cute, if I may say so myself.
It’s not my hair. Or my skin. Or my ass. Those have all been freshly cut, highlighted, scrubbed, or ignored as appropriate.
It’s not my laptop. Or my cards. Or my swag. Those are all ready to go (and my swag is way cool).
It’s not my personality. Or my misanthropic tendencies. Or my surging hormones. Although the last of those may cause me to tear up not just at the sight of Mayberry Mom (like I did last year), but also at the sight of those with whom I’ve grown much closer over the past year.
It’s the weather. That’s what’s got me all worked up. More specifically, it’s the humidity that I dread.
I used to love humidity. Sure, it was uncomfortable and sweaty, but I could breathe humid air. Dry air was painful to breathe. My Air Force ROTC field training was in Spokane. Back then, I could hardly run a mile and a half in humid midwestern air. I really sucked wind in the arid atmosphere of eastern Washington.
But having moved to Denver two years ago, I’ve grown to love the dry air. It’s not hard to breathe. Even when it’s really thin. And even though I spend a lot more on moisturizer than before, my hair has never looked better.
I returned to the humidity for a brief visit only three months after moving here, and I nearly choked. It was so HOT. And sticky. And buggy. The air had a visible haze. I wanted to get out the Windex and wipe the sky clean. And then take a cold shower. For about an hour.
I’ll admit it; I’ve been spoiled by the weather here. Yes, there are days when it’s unbearably hot, and it can snow anytime between October and May. But we also get 300+ days of sunshine – temperate and lovely – and can wear short sleeves year-round.
I fear that in Chicago any one or all of the following will happen:
- I will sweat like a pig from head to toe, rendering my face shiny, my pits damp, and my feet stinky.
- My hair will embrace the humidity like a long-lost friend and all evidence of careful blow-drying will be shot to hell.
- I will get a dozen mosquito bites. In places where it’s rude to scratch.
So while the picture below may be accurate here in Colorado, I take no responsibility for how far I may stray from this image while I’m in Chicago.

And for the purposes of the Great BlogHer Photo Scavenger Hunt (sponsored by Cool Mom Picks!), you can score points off me in the following ways:
- I will be drinking non-alcoholic beverages. All weekend.
- I will be wearing black nail polish.
- My name is Julie.
- My shoe size is 6.5.

HA!
I have my hair cut for its natural frizzy state in the humidity level of 145% I live in, on a dry day.
I feel your pain…but is Chicago particularly humid? I never noticed. I guess it seems dry to me LOL.

I have naturally wavy hair and here in Nashville I have battled humidity for YEARS.
You know what I have found lately that works wonders? Kids’ detangling spray!
Of course I walk around smelling like an apple, but I don’t have the relentless FRIZZ.
You look mav-velous.

Eh, we’ll be in air conditioning 90% of the time, so I think you’ll be OK hair-wise. Any humidity that does get in your hair will be stripped out by the A/C.
Can’t wait to see you! And cool swag, too? That’ll be fun! All I had time to do this year was business cards. Although if Mira acts up too much, I might raffle her off.

Delurking to say: I bet you’d look mah-vuh-lous no matter the weather – I mean, look at the smile – and I am so looking forward to meeting you!
I’ll be the one sweating buckets and wearing a brown paper bag on my head!

I spent 3 summers in Illinois, so my loins are girded for the humidity. I KNOW my hair will be boinging all over the place.
What am I not prepared for? My credit card bill. Yeeps.

Air-conditioning. You’ll be fine!
July 23rd, 2007 at 6:02 am
I’m with Christina. We’ll be freezing our asses off in the a/c so I’m not worried.
I worry about actually having TO DO my hair. I get it blown out on Wednesday. That means I’ll have to do it on Saturday (or worse, Friday).
Or I’ll be the weirdo at the hair salon at the W (do they have one?) with a baby on my lap getting my hair done!

For god sakes people, it’s the midwest, not the Amazon. And you’ll be happy to know that the mosquito population is down this year:

Damn, I dropped the ball on ordering swag…

I’m sure you’ll be fine, you look great in that pic!!! I’m now terrified of ever going to BlogHer, you ladies are too gorgeous!

I’m not sure any city can top the humidity of Florida so it will probably be an improvement for my frizz issues. Or not.
Better get some anti-frizz serum just in case!

I agree with the gals above — we are going to be too busy inside to even notice the humidity!
I expect tears when you see me — lots of ‘em

You are beautiful!
I know what you mean about the humidity! When I lived in Arizona in high school, I was amazed at the difference in my skin and hair.
My feet are huge compared to yours!

I don’t know what the forecast will be for Saturday, you never know in the midwest, but I can tell you that this past week has been unseasonable cool with low humidity. In fact, it was too cold for me to run yesterday at 8 AM! (I’m about 2 hours from Chicago.)
Anyway, have fun. I wish I could go to Blogher… This year it’s somewhere I can actually drive to but they keep scheduling it on my daugther’s birthday!
July 23rd, 2007 at 10:57 am
hope you have a great time… and survive the sticky thick heat
July 23rd, 2007 at 11:28 am
I’ll be right at home with the humidity since I’m from St. Louis although I still can’t stand it. I haven’t decided on the black polish yet but I have a pink cell phone.
July 23rd, 2007 at 11:29 am
It is more likely that you will freeze to death from air conditioning over exposure.
July 23rd, 2007 at 1:51 pm
hear hear! As a spoiled Californian this is why I never leave a/c when visiting humid places. I don’t remember Chicago being as bad as DC or Miami. I’m fascinated by the torential rain we may get, as we don’t get anything like that here, but am worried I’ll look like a drenched rat as I’m a little dangerous with an umbrella.
July 23rd, 2007 at 2:44 pm
Frizz schmizz. (And trust me, my hair walks into a room before I do.)
It’s going to be a great weekend.
July 23rd, 2007 at 4:56 pm
Aw jeez! I didn’t even think about the humidity. Wait, what am I saying? I’m in Mass., humidity is a way of life here.
Whatever. You look fabulous, dahling. Can’t wait to see you!
July 23rd, 2007 at 4:57 pm
You will recognize Bossy right away. She will be the one drinking in the corner who looks like Roseanne Roseanna Danna.
July 23rd, 2007 at 6:14 pm
well. i hate to jinx it, but last few days in michigan have been diviiiiiiine. 70s and lovely. you wait. now the humdity will set in.
6.5 shoe? what kind of midget freak ARE you??? (I need a pic of your daint foot next to HBM or Mocha’s great clodhoppers). (heh).
July 23rd, 2007 at 6:21 pm
As someone who grew up in Chicago, I am counting on the A/C and just accepting the fact that my hair is going to be crazy.
July 23rd, 2007 at 8:50 pm
Do you know my hair?
If you knew my hair you wouldn’t be stressing about the humidity so much as keeping an eye on my hair to see what it does.
Think: Magenta, from Rocky Horror.
You only think I’m joking.
July 24th, 2007 at 1:05 am
i wish i could be there to meet you, but lady m will have something for you from me.
have a great time (even sans alcohol)!
July 24th, 2007 at 8:18 am
I have my Ph.D in Humidity now that I live in the Deep South. I could have awesome hair anywhere but here!
Have fun. Your hair will be fine.
July 25th, 2007 at 3:28 pm
My hair looks like piss when I leave the state of Colorado. It’s ruined me forever.
