Don’t have a cow, man

I slowly become aware of the sounds of “Family Guy” emanating from the TV.  I glance at the clock on my laptop.

J: All right, I think it’s time for Tacy to go to bed.

T and K break out in laughter.

J (suspiciously): What?

K (still chuckling): I told her that we’d watch “Family Guy” until you noticed and told us to turn it off.

Thanks a lot, Bart.  You know that I blame you for this, don’t you?

“The Simpsons” weren’t the first, but I consider them the standard bearer.  A prime time show on a major television network, they’ve lasted 18 seasons and spawned all types of merchandise emblazoned with those creepy yellow-faced characters.

In college, I watched Ren and Stimpy on Nickelodeon.  Sing it with me:  “It rolls down stairs, alone or in pairs, rolls over the neighbor’s dog.  It fits on your back, it’s great as a snack, it’s log…it’s log…it’s log!”  Happy happy!  Joy joy!

Then Beavis and Butt-head debuted on MTV.  “Shut up, Beavis!  I’m trying to score!”

And then there was South Park, which Kyle still loves:  ”Mr. Hankey, the Christmas poo.  He loves me, and I love you.  Therefore, vicariously he loves you!”  But his mother doesn’t like it, not one bit:  “Oh, Kyle’s mom’s a bitch, she’s a big fat bitch, she’s the biggest bitch in the whole wide world…”

I’ve already confessed our family’s addiction to SpongeBob, although I’ll reiterate that I only turn to “Bobby” when we’ve had one of those days that makes me want to uncork the wine at 4 o’clock.  Now Kyle has introduced Tacy to “The Simpsons”, and I have a hard time restraining myself from insisting that “just because it’s animated doesn’t mean it’s for children!”

Granted, she doesn’t understand much of the humor and I definitely prefer it to SpongeBob.  I don’t expect that she’ll start emulating Bart – Lisa, more likely.  And as long as “Family Guy” doesn’t become standard fare, I think this is a battle I’ll choose to ignore.

    LMAO!

Now you have me singing ‘Kyle’s Mom’s A Bitch’. I haven’t heard that in awhile. Heee!

I love all those shows. Of course, if I had kids, I dunno if I’d watch them so freely. (I mean, we own every single Spongebob on DVD!)

I miss the “old” Cartoon Network — Dexter, Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack… I’m not, however, ashamed to admit I like a bit of SpongeBob. Favorite eps. being the Krusty Krab employee training video, and the one where Squidward fields a band for the football half-time show — always winds up with me singing along loudly at the end. And trust me, I can give Dave Bickler a run for his money…

I can see why Kyle’s mum would hate that show! I always hated Mr Hanky because it made me feel ill. I love Family Guy though! I think the good thing about those cartoons is that kids just don’t get the adult humour and tend to only see them as a cartoon.

    Ah yes, log! “it’s log! It’s log! It’s big it’s heavy, it’s wood! It’s log…it’s log..it’s better than bad, it’s good!”

Sigh…I love all of those shows.

You know I think of you all every time I call one of my cranky kids a “krabby patty.”

I love, BTW, that Kyle’s label is the King of beers. LOL.

  6. Lara Says:

my friend’s email program makes a noise every time she gets new mail, and it’s the little six-note intro to the log song. so every time she has mail when i’m around, i start singing that song. ah, good times.

and hey, don’t forget about futurama, too! :)

  7. Mitzi Says:

i, too, loved ren & stimpy, and staunchly defend my right to watch it. i am, however, not a 5 year old with a slew of well-documented behavior problems, the vocabulary of a 30 year old, and the uncanny ability to remember (and recite) every line from every show, movie or song i’m not supposed to. which is why bob gets to watch food network, animal planet, and a few cartoons on the “approved” list. and why i can no longer listen to joan jett when he’s in the damn car.

  8. Mrs Mogul Says:

I like the opening song to SpongeBob. It’s just wacky!

  9. Jen M. Says:

(whispering) I laugh out loud at Sponge Bob sometimes.

  10. Mrs. Chicky Says:

Now I’m going to have the Log song stuck in my head all day. Thanks a lot.

(btw, your banner won’t load for some reason.)

  11. Mom101 Says:

    It’s loooog it’s loooog it’s big it’s heavy it’s wood

It’s looog It’s loooog it’s better than bad it’s good!

Damn you, I’m going to totally have this stuck in my head through my whole labor.

Funny you should say this b/c I just posted a great Family Guy clip in honor of Mother’s Day. I have a bunch of South Park videos and the kids can’t understand why I won’t let them watch them (yet). I am forever telling them to “RESPECT MY AUTHOR-I-TIE!”
