Channeling Stuart Smalley…

Listen up, all you so-called mommybloggers.  Enough is enough.

Around the worldWe’ve got advanced degrees.  We’ve traveled the world.  We’ve got ideas and opinions and stories to tell that - believe it or not - don’t involve poop.  We’re more than SAHMs or WAHMs or WOHMs or MILFs or any other acronym.  We transcend any label that anyone might apply to us - whether they intend it as a compliment or not.

We’ve posted about how we don’t quite know what to say when people ask, “So what do you do?”

Well, here’s what we do:  We write on the web, in a variety of forums, such as… (and this list is a work in progress - tell me who I’ve missed!)

Anti-Racist Parent

Blogging Baby

Club Mom

Cool Mom Picks

Dot-Moms

Imperfect Parent

Literary Mama

And the one that brought more of us together in one place than any other:

BlogHer - a tremendous movement of women bloggers in all walks of life and in all sorts of professional capacities.  Take a look at the list of members, the breadth of the topics on which women are writing, the events and conferences in support of women bloggers

BlogHer is also capitalizing on advertisers’ hunger for women’s attention (and bloggers’ hunger for additional income), and the latest initiative - public service announcements supporting organizations such as Doctors Without Borders - has reaped unforeseen and hugely admirable results:  TheFind.com, a BlogHer sponsor, has begun an advertising campaign to promote their fundraising efforts for Doctors Without Borders.  Check my sidebar, and start searching for red items on TheFind.com!

That’s right - our collective efforts as part of the BlogHer Ad Network have inspired one of our sponsors to donate up to $10,000 to a charitable organization, thanks to our public service announcement.

That’s HUGE.  And yet it’s only a small example of the power we wield.

This medium is still in its infancy.  Whether we are writing about dirty diapers or democratic discourse - and many of us write about both of these, in addition to so much more - we are blazing a trail.

Stay tuned for more trail developments…

Bravo mothergoosemouse… Thanks for sharing all the links. Isn’t it great that we are all writing! For years it was all about the printed word, and now we have so many forums to spread our creative talents.

Being able to raise money for Doctors Without Borders with just the space I inhabit online is something I could have never imagined before I started blogging. To think that my readers are providing help to such an important cause just by clicking a link on my sidebar is mind-boggling.

You’re darn right we’re blazing a trail, just think of what we might be doing this time next year!

That is amazing! But I have a really dumb question. What is MILF?

  16. mothergoosemouse Says:

Jessica, it stands for Mother I’d Like to F#$%. From American Pie. Crude, but possibly still flattering.

  17. Jamie Says:

Hear, hear! I agree wholeheartedly and to flashback to my 8th grade graduation theme song, “We’ve Only Just Begun!” Cheesie, yes, but oh so true.

  18. Jamie Says:

p.s. I love the wisdom of Stuart Smalley…thanks for the SNL flashback!

  19. A Gaggle of Girls » This was going to be a whining post Says:

[...] Check out what MotherGooseMouse wrote about BlogHer and the non-profit ads that turned into a fabulous opportunity for everyone. Check out TheFind on my left sidebar and start searching and shopping for “red” items. As one of the BlogHer co-founders wrote: TheFind will donate to Doctors without Borders $1 per day for every search for a “red” item in their search engine. In other words, if you search for “red pancake turner” once day for ten days, you will be responsible for $10 in donations. This campaign will run until the goal of a $10,000 donation for Doctors Without Borders is reached. [...]

MotherGoose, you rock star. Thank you so much for this post — and for making the superb point that we can and are change this world for the better. Even as we focus on the little lives in the back of the mini-van. :) Amazing — put women like you and everyone else on this list together in a for-profit advertising network and what do we do? We figure out a way to do good and give away $10,000 in vaccinations to people we’ll never meet. (Here’s the back-story about how this whole thing started, for anyone interested.)

Listen up world — I think this group of bloggers has stumbled upon an exciting new business model. You all are the glue.
