If you can’t say something nice…
…then go away, because this post is all about nice.
I simply don’t understand the trolls, the flames, the so-called WARS. It’s fun to make fun of Britney and K-Fed. It’s pathetic to be a jerk to people you don’t even know.
In support of Her Bad Mother’s brilliant idea to celebrate our womanhood, our motherhood, and our burgeoning friendships, in this post I will write a few personal lines about each person on my blogroll. I know some of you better than others – some in person, some through correspondence, some online only – but I’ve found something to appreciate in all of you. The same is true for those I’ve not yet added but still enjoy immensely.
In alphabetical order, saving Her Bad Mother for the finale:
Agnostic Mom – Noell, you are a great resource for me – helping to answer those questions that my children will inevitably have, without prejudicing them against others or vice versa.
amalah – Amy, for an Internet supa-stah, you are refreshingly down to earth and appreciative of your readers. Thank you for not taking us for granted.
Blonde Mom Blog – Jamie, you are one of my newer reads, and our lives sound so similar in many respects, especially with our girls and the respective age differences between them.
Builder Mama – Liz, I love commiserating about the joys of construction and project management. If only we could work together…
Chaos Among Us – Jenni, between your work stories and your twin stories, you are a total riot. The life of the party (especially with some amaretto)!
Chicky Chicky Baby – Mrs. Chicky, you are unfailingly entertaining. I think our husbands should get together and cook us dinner while we drink wine and watch our girls play.
East Village Idiot – I sincerely hope that you don’t end up having to leave New York because I adore your stories of your Alphabet City version of Walton’s Mountain. I’m fascinated by the history you have in the city I’ve grown to love.
Fancypants – Jess, I promise I will make that trip to Boston. We will go out shopping, then we will drink wine and watch Veronica Mars, and then we will download songs from iTunes. You will do high kicks and I will bow down to you.
Fluid Pudding – Angela, I love to read about your girls, and you share such interesting details of your life. Plus, you knit beautifully. And Happy Birthday to you!!
Froggie Mom – Renee, you are a steel magnolia. I love your stories of life in the country, and your good cheer and optimism are contagious.
I am doing the best I can – Dawn, your honesty and openness is rare and refreshing. I know you are facing many upcoming challenges, and I’m confident that you will conquer them all. Please don’t get me too drunk at BlogHer, okay?
I’m ablogging – Meghan, you can always make me laugh. Even when you are frustrated, there’s no hiding your sense of humor. And despite our differences, we have a great deal in common.
Izzy Mom – Izzy, you are one of the friendliest, most approachable people I’ve ever “met”. Warm and kind and utterly hilarious, muffin top and all.
jenandtonic – Jen, I will suspend my ban on physical affection so that I can hug you at BlogHer. I’m truly flattered that you read and comment, especially on my Flickr photos. You are an incredible person.
Joansy Rambles – Joansy, we’re as different as we can be in so many ways, but I greatly admire what you do for society, and through our blogs, I think we’ve come to learn that we have more in common than we thought.
Karianna – Kari, you’ve been with me from almost the very beginning. When I read your posts, I feel as if we are having a conversation, and I look forward to actually conversing in person at BlogHer. I can hardly believe that we once unknowingly lived mere blocks from one another.
mainely madge – Why did we have to move away before we “met”? Can you imagine the fun we would have had together back in New York? I know that you and Tugboat and Birdy will triumph over the forces of evil, and I will toast you with a real Kir Royale.
Mandajuice – Amanda, I admire your easy self-confidence and your positive outlook. I’m really excited for you to have a little girl – you are such a fantastic example for her.
Mayberry Mom – My BlogHer roomie! You are a wonderful IRL friend, and I miss you and your family so much. I can hardly wait to see you again and to get Jo and Tacy (BFF!) back together.
melanhead – Will you please start blogging again? I miss you, but I refuse to take you off my blogroll while you’re on hiatus. And even if you don’t start up again, I’m still coming to see you in N’awlins someday.
milkbreath and me – Rachel, you are one of the most intelligent and wittiest people I know. I hope you realize how much I appreciate your humor.
Milliner’s Dream – Hannah, I love to see my world through your eyes in the comments that you leave for me. Your dedication to clinical nursing and your doula practice are inspirational.
mimi smartypants – Mimi, yours was the first blog (diary) I ever read, beginning with your entry on Maisy. I would love to buy you several beers someday, my fellow wetodded sofa king.
Mom-Ma’am-Me – Nancy, I wish I had known you back when we regularly visited the NoVA area – or better yet, when I lived there. You are so thoughtful and funny, and I love to hear about your girls (who are so much like my girls!).
Mom Writes – Mary, you are so good at bringing people together, finding and emphasizing commonalities. I can always learn something new from you. I look forward to some punk rock reminiscing at BlogHer.
Mom-101 – Liz, you are just plain COOL. So poised, so well-spoken (well-written?). I wish I had known you back when I lived and worked in New York.
Mommy Needs Coffee – Jenn, you are an amazing person. I have such respect and admiration for you. Thank you for the creative ideas on how to combat World of Warcraft widowhood.
Motherhood Uncensored – Kristen, you earned my undying loyalty from the very first post of yours that I read. I knew right then that you and I would get along just fine. You have created a community, and I admire your drive and charisma.
Mrs. Fortune – Rhymes-with-story-but-it’s-not-Lori, I bow down to you. Not only are you pants-wettingly funny, but you teach junior high school kids and post entries one day after giving birth. I’m not worthy!
Naked in my Pants - Beth, I’m so glad you crawled out from under the covers to rejoin us. You are so clever and sharp as a tack. No wonder you won on Jeopardy and thwart the pervs on a daily basis.
Nixie Knox – Nixie, I hope you will start blogging again too. I miss your great stories about your kids – both at home and at school. Jesus Nixie, punch that flight attendant in the face!
nothing but bonfires – Holly, you already tell the most amazing stories, even those about rednecks and dumpster diving for lawn furniture. I can only imagine how much I will enjoy the tales you will tell from your upcoming travels.
Riley’s Ramblings – Jess, you are pants-shittingly funny. Your wit seems effortless, and your story-telling is masterful. I will be first in line to buy your book.
roo the day – Roo, you are truly an artist – with words and with materials. I wish I had known you when we lived in the same old neighborhood. We would have empanadas and walk along the Boulevard, admiring the view of your new neighborhood.
Secret Cave of the Sugar Mama – Sugarmama, I admire your honesty and the wisdom and perspective that you share. I also hope that someday you will send me some delicious goodies (or at least share some dessert-making tips).
Soul Gardening – TB, you are so kind, you write beautifully, and you make me think. I wish you and Jeff the greatest success in your new and continuing adventures.
Sweatpants Mom – Marsha, you are so clever. Your dry sense of humor and deadpan delivery – even in print – are hilarious, and your tales of your girls impress the sweatpants off me.
Table For Five – Elizabeth, you are such a genuinely nice person. I really hope you win the Mommybloggers contest, because I don’t want to wait until BlogHer 2007 to meet you!
Three Kid Circus – Jenny, your stories help me look forward to watching my girls grow up (instead of clinging to their babyhood). You remind me to embrace chaos, not rebel against it – life’s much more fun that way.
Throwing Bananas at Toddlers – Gretchen, you are calm, cool, and collected – regardless of what’s thrown at you (or what you’re throwing).
Where am I going…and why am I in this handbasket? – mama_tulip, you are incredibly versatile. Reading one post, I’m laughing…and reading the next, I’m crying.
Wonder Mom – Kris, even though I didn’t win your latest giveaway, I’m very glad that I found you. We seem to have a great deal in common, and I look forward to reading and laughing even more in the future.
Her Bad Mother – Bad Mother, you are just da bomb. Thank you so very much for taking action and turning a negative into a positive. We’ve all been up in arms – each in our own way – against the trolls. Fighting them is not our goal. Celebrating our happiness and the connections we’ve made – that’s what we’re about.

May 12th, 2006 at 11:33 pm
I’m impressed that you could get through that whole list without repeating yourself numerous times, as I would have done. You’re a nice lady. Good work, there.
May 12th, 2006 at 12:05 pm
I’m always telling you that you reach right into my heart and mind and dammit! You’ve done it again.
I’ve thought so many times about saying a little something about all the great people on my blogroll but have you seen my blogroll? It would be a daunting task and so I’ve procrastinated. But you did an awesome job here. You’re a wonderful writer as well as a a very cool yet grounded person. I only wish I’d found you sooner!
Happy Mother’s Day!
(and thanks for your kind words. You made me smile during a very bad point in my day that I’m sure I’ll blog about later)

Thank you, Julie.
May 12th, 2006 at 1:23 pm
Julie — I love that you did this! You are the best and I can’t wait to raise my glass to you at BlogHer.
I agree so much with what you wrote about trolls, flames, wars, etc. That stuff really brings me down.
Happy Mother’s Day! (As my gift to you, I updated your URL in my link list. Gee, aren’t I nice?)
May 12th, 2006 at 1:34 pm
Oh gosh, now I’ve gotten all emotional. What a wonderful, thoughtful, and huge-hearted thing to do! I toast you, Julie. I feel so lucky to have “met” you & so many of the other fantastic writers in your blogroll. What a gift!
Oh how I wish I were going to Blogher. Next year for sure.
May 12th, 2006 at 1:46 pm
Aw! AWWWWW! Thank you, Julie! It came right on a day when I weren’t feelin’ too smart, neither, so that was extra nice. Have a great Mother’s Day, and I hope your springtime finally warms up!

I appreciate very much your comment on my blog today, and saying suc nice things about me on your OWN blog is just over the top. Thanks for the good cheer–I needed it today.

It’s probably a good thing for both our livers that we DIDN’T meed back in NYC, but sad nonetheless.
I’ll always love you for being my first regular and because you tell a fantastic story.
Oh, and because your husband owns and wears a Rush tee, of course.
May 12th, 2006 at 4:08 pm
That was amazing! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
May 12th, 2006 at 7:06 pm
Julie -
This was great. It made me feel so special. Will you marry me? Okay, not really, but that was a wonderful thing to do. You’ve made all of us girls love you just a little bit more…
May 12th, 2006 at 7:24 pm
Yes, high kicks and iTunes go together like PB and jelly. I’ll hold you to that visit.
May 12th, 2006 at 7:38 pm
Awww, Julie! Thank you! I hope I win the contest too because you deserve a hug for doing that, not just for me but for everybody on this list. We’re all so lucky to have you as a Blog Friend.
May 12th, 2006 at 7:40 pm
Well thanks! And might I add that you are so much of the reason I finally got off my ass and started my blog… so thanks for that too; and see you soon!
May 12th, 2006 at 7:48 pm
I’m just plain impressed. And not just because you said nice things about me (which always ups someone’s standing in my eyes) but because you take the time to “know” the women in the community. Happy to be sharing this corner of the internet with you, mama. And if Dawn doesn’t get you looped at BlogHer, I promise to.
May 12th, 2006 at 8:17 pm
Aw, Happy Mother’s Day to you. What a cool thing to do. I’m honored to be on your list, thanks for the kind words.
May 12th, 2006 at 8:53 pm
Thank you so much Julie! It is nice to be missed! I promise that even if I throw my blog in the crapper that I will regularly stop by your pad to check on you and your amazing family!
May 12th, 2006 at 9:42 pm
Dude. Color me impressed. I couldn’t say that many nice things about the people I’m related to, for Pete’s sake. Allow me this opportunity to say something nice about you: You. Rock.
Simple in it’s monosyllabic-ness, eh?
May 12th, 2006 at 10:37 pm
Awwww! I want to come over there and squeeze the poop out of you! What a wonderful thing to do.
Happy Mother’s Day, sweetie!

Happy Mother’s Day!
May 15th, 2006 at 9:20 am
That was wonderful, Julie. I really want to do something similar at some point to honor all the amazing women that I’ve come to know via blogging. I appreciate your kind words, and I look forward to meeting you at BlogHer!
May 15th, 2006 at 1:24 pm
Hi Julie,
I love the new site. Congratulations! I am so glad I make you laugh. It’s the best medicine. Thank you so much. It means a lot to know that my writing has that effect.
You know, I suspect we have have some varying opinions, politically speaking, but for the most part I think we have a great deal in common too. And two intelligent women can SO easily agree to disagree, especially when we usually have so much to talk about. You are the best.
May 15th, 2006 at 4:53 pm
Yay! thank you! and obviously, as i have said before, i think you are an amazing writer — i think you should publish some of your entries…
May 17th, 2006 at 2:39 am
Thank you so much for including me! I’m so honored, especially since I’m a fan of your writing as well. What an amazing gesture, to personally say something to all these people. You’re awesome.
May 18th, 2006 at 9:18 pm
Julie, you can have an empanada on me, anytime.
Thanks for writing all those nice things about me. You made me smile.
May 20th, 2006 at 12:22 pm
Thank you, Julie! Both for your kind words about me, and for introducing me to other wonderful women that I wouldn’t have otherwise known.
Your list is much more personal than just the typical blogroll.
Many Thanks!

You have no idea how much I needed this today. I am way, way behind on reading my favorite bloggers…which includes you.
I found you moved and then followed the link (AFTER updating my blogroll with your new addy) and find THIS nice mention of me.
I am in one of those near-tears-over-anything-I-am-soooo-tired-moods.
Thanks.
