Great expectations
Why do I ask so much of someone so small? She may be scary-smart, but she’s only three. There’s only so much I can reasonably expect from her.
And the tears she sheds when I am upset with her or disappointed in her. They break my heart and melt me into a puddle, just like the […]

How we ended up in New York in the first place
While I am proud of my acquired New York brashness, I’m not a native. Neither is Kyle. Both girls are - just barely.
Many books - even children’s books - are set in New York. As an avid reader, I developed a fascination with New York quite early. I was also a fan of the sitcom […]

Sisters were doin’ it for themselves
In Meghan’s archives, I found a post about her experiences in a sorority. Reading her post dredged up some old memories for me, stuff I haven’t thought about in years.
I rushed in the fall of my sophomore year, along with my four closest friends. I was a legacy of the “top” sorority on campus, but […]

Recent amusing conversations
With my 89 year old grandmother:
G: Do you know who Jerry Springer is?
J (stifling a laugh): Yes.
G: His show is on at 3 in the morning. I watch him when I can’t sleep.”
J laughs.
G: I’m not above watching Jerry Springer.
With Tacy:
T is rubbing a piece of watermelon all over the palms of her hands.
J (exasperated): […]

Reading - Chick lit
I was reading an entry on Bitch Ph.D. about chick lit earlier today, and it started me thinking about why I’ve essentially stopped reading fiction. I truly enjoyed Bridget Jones’ Diary and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, but many of the other “chick lit” books I read have soured me on the genre and […]

“Mom, you’ll break the law if you stop loving me.”
Said by Tacy tonight before bed.
Can you see why I want to just eat her up?

Wild wild life
I’m not outdoorsy. I don’t like hiking, camping, fishing, hunting - any of that stuff. Wild animals unnerve me. I’m not even fond of domesticated ones, like farm animals. I much prefer the smell of bus exhaust over manure.
On my house-hunting trip to Denver, I discovered seven deer standing in the front yard of the […]

I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, but…
…don’t bother doing it if you aren’t going to fold it.

Back to square one
Not quite, but close.
I was so disappointed by our recent visit with the in-laws. I can’t even legitimately characterize it as a visit, since they didn’t stay with us and we saw very little of them.
I haven’t always gotten along with my in-laws. The first time I met them, I walked in the door of […]
