The magic of coffee

I swear coffee is magical. The way it induces us to poop! It’s almost like clockwork. Sometimes it only takes a couple sips. Back in college, when I first started drinking coffee, I was also a cigarette smoker. A couple sips of coffee, a couple puffs on a cigarette, and I was heading for the bathroom.

Coffee is also magical in that it’s a mood elevator. I can tell when Kyle hasn’t had enough coffee (or any coffee at all). I’ll ask him, “Do you need some coffee?” in the same tone that you might say, “Do you need a hug?” to a toddler who just fell and skinned her knee.

And drinking coffee is a comforting ritual. It’s one of the millions of things I miss about New York. Every morning I’d get off the bus at Port Authority, walk eight blocks to my office building – which had TWO Starbuck’s locations in it, get my tall skim latte, and head upstairs to drink it and read my e-mail. Now I have to drive to get coffee, and I have to remember that they don’t say “skim” here. They say “non-fat”.

On the weekends, Kyle makes coffee at home. We call it “sponge coffee”. I once had a dream in which he made me a cup of coffee, and instead of having foamed milk on top, it had a kitchen sponge on top, sprinkled with chocolate and vanilla. We also call it “foffee”, as that’s how Tacy used to say coffee. She drinks “foffee” too – foamed milk with sprinkles, scooped up with a spoon from her tiny red Ohio State mug.

Coffee may be a passing fad, but it’s here to stay at our house.

Great post. And I thought I was the only one rushing to the bathroom after a few sips of the morning brew.

Thanks! Maybe it’s partially psychosomatic, but hey, whatever works.

Coffee – nah, it will never, but never be put aside. We have up our cigarettes, we drink modestly, so, no, no, we will never but never give up our coffee nor will I give up my cream for my coffee. There are two in things in this life one should never have to give up – cream in one’s coffee and mayonaise. Need I more?

Well, it looks I was somewhat in a hurry – gave not have, and, need I say more. Sorry!!!!!!
